When we say our work is meaningful, what do we actually experience?

Our research found four ways we experience meaning: making a difference, using our talents to the full, having a sense of belonging, and being aligned with our true self. And these need to be in some sort of balance – that works for us.

But that’s not all, because experiencing a meaningful life includes our need to be inspired, while at the same time being connected to the reality of ourselves and our lives.

So we learned that meaning does not come from one source alone, but from all these experiences, coming together in a day, a week, a month, a life-time – or a moment.

People find more meaning when they can meet their needs across all four pathways over time.
